Landaff Board of Education Nov 18, 2008
Landaff Blue School 6:15 PM
813 Mill Brook Rd
Landaff, NH 03585
Minutes
Present: Head Teacher Claire Cochrane, Board Members Kelly Jesseman and Mary Beaudin, Superintendent Bob Patterson, and SAU Business Manager Sandy Stone.
- The meeting was called to order at 6:17 PM.
- Mr. Ed Peterson, the Landaff Town Constable, was present at the meeting to discuss the recent break in and get an update of the situation. M Beaudin reported that State Trooper, Nate Hamilton, also a Landaff resident, came into the school to investigate on Saturday, November 8th, and has since then had a meeting with two suspects and has two other possible suspects to interview. She went on to report that Nov 8th was the day that J Cartwright was at the school installing video surveillance, and he discovered someone still logged into one of the computers who was not a student or employee. M Beaudin joined him to see if she could identify the user. Together they discovered a list of log in names and passwords which helped them identify some of the suspects who were breaking into the school to use the computers. The people breaking in were using the computers to go to sites such as facebook. It was noted that the side door to the blue building is broken, and can be opened when locked by pulling up on the handle. A dead bolt has been added to the door since the 8th. Officer Hamilton told M Beaudin he is aware of who broke the lock. He wants for the suspects, their parents and the school board members to have a meeting to discuss restitution and community service.
Mr. Peterson reported that C Cochrane notified him of the break ins and he drove by the afternoon of the 8th and saw four boys playing basketball outside the school.
C Cochrane reminded the board that the breaker bar lock on the side door needs to be replaced as soon as possible because they cannot legally use the dead bolt during school hours. The board instructed her not to use the dead bolt during school hours and that the breaker bar would be sufficient for now.
B Patterson noted that it seemed like the town of Landaff was taking care of the situation for now. M Beaudin stated that she and J Cartwright have discussed some ideas for restitution. C Cochrane has a list of damages the culprits have caused and M Beaudin estimated it around $1500.00. Mr Patterson went on to say that he is disappointed by all the dishonesty these culprits have shown: lying, stealing, breaking in. He voiced his opinion that serious consequences should be given. C Cochrane also stated she did not want these culprits to get a slap on the wrist.
Mr. Peterson left the meeting at 6:50 PM. J Cartwright tried to call in to the meeting at this time, but it was determined that the current phones at the school do not have a speaker phone feature.
- There were no corrections to the minutes from the meeting Oct 21, 2008.
- Bills were signed by board members present. S Stone handed out an updated grant report, a tuition invoice and a financial report. She reported that two tuition students from Landaff have moved out of Landaff. The school district’s deficit has decreased to $673.54.
Educational expenses regarding a student being placed in an alternative school were discussed. This student is moving to Whitefield and the Landaff School District will pay tuition to Whitefield until the student actually moves. K Jesseman will check on the residency of two other students on the list.
- M Beaudin asked about the cost of the outside lights and if it had been determined. C Cochrane noted that the cost is $150.00 and was reflected in the letters sent to the two families responsible for the costs.
B Patterson reported that he sent follow up letters with return receipts to the families of the two students that caused the vandalism at the Blue School. There was talk about asking the town constable to help the school get the money for the damage done.
- B Patterson discussed his notes from the last e board meeting. A special education resource person will be hired and work two days a week at the central office. The new superintendent will be a full time position and will be a CAO- chief academic officer. The SAU will begin to advertise for the position.
He also discussed activity concerning the lawsuit against the SAU and the individual school districts. There will be a mediation meeting and the e board came up with a litigation team to represent all the school districts in the SAU. Landaff can use this team or choose to send their own representative. M Beaudin made a motion to authorize the SAU 35 Litigation Team to negotiate during mediation in regards to the Littleton suit, and to adopt or confirm any agreement that may be reached. K Jesseman seconded the motion. The board voted and the motion passed.
C Cochrane asked what happened to the Lisbon board joining one of our fall meetings. M Beaudin stated that as chair, J Cartwright should have invited them. Since he was not present, B Patterson said he would invite them to our December meeting. It was also noted that the Full Board Meeting is December 3rd at Lafayette.
M Beaudin, after reviewing the absence/tardy report of Landaff students at Lisbon, asked about two students with problem attendance and how the situation was being addressed. C Cochrane stated that the situation may be due to a suspension. B Patterson will follow up with Mr. Sexton at Lisbon.
- There were no board reports.
- C Cochrane noted that documentation of the vandalism case has been given to the board members. She also reported that the trimester system is being tried out at the Blue School.
She noted that the school play is December 18th and asked if caroling needs to be continued this year. D Cartwright volunteered to set up a list of locations to carol and requested that it only take place during the morning hours of the school day instead of an entire day.
C Cochrane also noted that the special ed student who now requires special transport due to the new law, will have a family member transport him to and from the school play activities.
M Beaudin asked why the board is not still reviewing time sheets and requested them for the next meeting.
M Beaudin asked B Patterson to discuss the scheduling of IEP meetings with Lisbon. She requested that IEP meetings for Landaff students take place after school. C Cochrane stated she would prefer meetings at 3 PM.
- Non-public Session RSA 91:3A I, II was not needed.
- There was no other business brought before the board.
- The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Denise Cartwright,
Landaff School Board Clerk
